Current Budget for the Stadium Proposal

The Plan/Debate: In 2006, Arthur Blank, the owner of the Atlanta Falcons football team (a franchise in the National Football League), announced their intention to construct a new football stadium. The plans took form over the next four years, when the Falcons ownership expressed their desire to stay close to downtown Atlanta and possibly construct an open-air stadium. 2013 became an important year as the process solidified into negotiations with the city to identify potential locations. In January, 2013, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed expressed his support for the new stadium and his willingness to work out a partial funding contribution from the city (AJC, Jan 11, 2013). The announcement initiated an intense debate and a series of negotiations over the question of where the new stadium would be located.

The estimated costs of the stadium have continued to rise, from an early estimation of 900 million, to 1 billion in 2012, and the current approximation of 1.2 billion dollars.
